Occaneechi Indians, Speedway, Mountain and more

Small town with a rich and fascinating history. The area has been home to the Occaneechi Indians for centuries, who were part of the larger Saponi Indian tribe.

The Occaneechi Indians were known for their agricultural skills, growing crops such as corn, beans, and squash. They were also skilled in hunting, fishing, and trading. The tribe had a complex social and political structure, with leaders known as “Beloved Men” who were responsible for making important decisions for the tribe.

In the 18th century, European settlers arrived in the area, and the Occaneechi Indians began to have interactions with the colonists. The tribe was decimated by disease and warfare, and by the early 19th century, most of the Occaneechi Indians had been forced to leave the area.

In recent years, the Occaneechi Tribe of North Carolina was recognized by the State of North Carolina in 2017. The tribe has since been working to re-establish their cultural heritage and to connect with their historical roots in the Hillsborough area.

Another interesting aspect of Occaneechi Hillsborough, is the presence of the Occoneechee Speedway. This mile oval racetrack was built in 1949, and it was the first NASCAR sanctioned track.  The track was closed in 1968 and it was abandoned for a few decades. In 2013, it was purchased by a group of preservationists and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In September of 2022 Tanya Kelly was proposed to by Adam Dickens right on the finish line, and she said YES!

Hillsborough, is a unique town with a rich history that spans centuries. The area has been home to the Occaneechi Indians, and it has been the site of the first NASCAR sanctioned track. The town is a great destination for history buffs and for those interested in exploring the rich cultural heritage of the area.
