Early History: Creedmoor acted as a railroad depot for the Oxford and Clarksville Railroad Company as well as the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad Company. This was made possible by a proposal made in 1885 by 25 taxpayers of Granville County and an offer of ten thousand dollars to the capitol stock of the Oxford and Clarksville Railroad Company. This proposal was quicly accepted and shortly after the town of Creedmoor began to quickly grow.
The Railroad: The Durham and Northern Railroad was a major factor in the growth of Creedmoor. The railway linked the town to Henderson and Durham, allowing goods to be transported more efficiently and helped to spur economic growth in the area. The railway also helped to bring people to Creedmoor, and the town became a hub for commerce and trade. This is mainly due to the fact that Creedmoor had three major railways going through it.
The 20th Century: In the 20th century, Creedmoor continued to grow and prosper. Like Durham, tobacco became very important to Creedmoor with four warehouses being built within the town. Eventually, Creedmoor had an even bigger tobacco market that Durham. Although tobacco was so profitable farmers also grew cotton which was too considered a cash crop. The town was officially incorporated in 1905 and saw a population boom in the 1930s. During this time, the city established itself as a center for agriculture, with several large farms operating in the area. While tobacco and cotton were popular Creedmoor became known as the “Mule Town” and is thought to at once have been the largest mule trading center in the world. Since agriculture was so popular, the Creedmoor Supply company was founded here as well as an auction barn. By the 1940’s more than $500,000 a year was spent on mules.
