Founded in 1848, Graham has been an important part of the Alamance County landscape for over 170 years. Early History: The town of Graham was originally founded in 1849 to make it easier for residents to get to Hillsborough. Over time, Graham grew and developed into a thriving community, with a bustling downtown and thriving business district.
North Carolina Railroad: With the North Carolina Railroad system quickly expanding the railroad company began to talk of building repair and maintenance shops within Graham. Residents didn’t want to have to endure the smoke, noise, and increase of activity that would come with it. Soon after the town passed a law making it so that no railroad tracks could come within one mile of the courthouse. As a result, the tracks were placed north of Graham and the shops were built to the west.
Industrialization: In the late 1800’s the Scott family built two cotton mills selling one to L. Banks Holt. These cotton mills served as the main source of employment and boosted the economy. Needing a way to travel between Burlington, Haw River, and Graham, The Piedmont Electric Company built a streetcar system to allow residents a quicker way to travel between these towns. The streetcars ran every day, year round and only costing 5 cents round-trip most residents took it to work and school. Unfortunately, with the availability of cars the streetcar system became obsolete and was taken out of service. During World War II the tracks were removed and the metal was sent away to help with the war effort.
20th Century: In the 20th century, Graham continued to grow and develop, with new homes, businesses, and institutions being established. Despite the rapid growth of the surrounding area, Graham has managed to maintain its small-town character and charm, making it a special place to live and visit.
