Your first day.
Install it on your Mac. Grant one folder. Ask three questions, and get answers that cite your own files, the same day. That is the whole setup: no configuration file, no import wizard, no call with us required. If you never grant a second folder, it never reads one.
How it keeps custody.
Nothing is collected until you grant it. Folders you have not granted are never even walked. A preview shows names, sizes, and dates without opening a single file. Pause and revoke work at any moment, and every exclusion stays visible in a ledger you can read, so nothing vanishes silently.
The reading happens on your machine. Documents are parsed, photos are read, and recordings are transcribed on your own hardware. Only that extracted text joins your private corpus, on infrastructure you can see, where models we host ourselves answer from it. No third-party AI provider ever sees a byte. The upload path for original files is a hard refusal in the code, not a setting someone can flip.
If it doesn’t know, it says so. An answer either cites your files or tells you, in writing, that your files don’t contain one. No filler, no guessing, no confident invention.
For the technical reader: every file is fingerprinted into an auditable local ledger, the synced record carries the same fingerprint, and so a citation can be traced back to exact bytes on your disk. The deeper mechanics live on the Trust page; this page’s job is simpler: you keep your files, and you still get the answers.

What we are not claiming. We do not claim SOC 2 or HIPAA, because those are not done yet. Companion is macOS today. This is software we run on our own machines every day, and we publish no metrics we have not measured.
